A Glimpse Inside Singapore’s Parliament: SAS Members Explore the Nation’s Legislative Heart

On 10 and 11 November 2025, 47 members of the Singapore Affairs Society (SAS) at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) visited the historic Parliament House, gaining an immersive look into Singapore’s parliamentary system and governance.

The visit provided a deeper understanding of the origins of Parliament, the roles and functions of Members of Parliament and the law-making process. Participants explored how debates are structured and how parliamentary decisions shape policies that affect everyday life in Singapore.

Highlights of the tour included walking along the iconic Speaker’s Row, exploring significant historical artefacts that chronicle Singapore’s political journey, and observing the Parliament Chamber from the Public Galleries – a rare opportunity to witness national governance in action.

Students also learned about mechanisms of accountability and representation that ensure Parliament functions effectively.

Beyond the historical and procedural knowledge, the visit encouraged reflection on the importance of civic awareness and engagement. Experiencing Parliament firsthand offered students a tangible perspective on how governance influences communities and daily life.

To conclude, the tour was an enriching and educational experience, combining history, civic understanding, and insight into Singapore’s legislative processes, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation of the workings of Singapore’s Parliament.

OCIP Sabah 2025: Beyond Borders, Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders

From 3 to 11 October 2025, eight SIM students travelled to Sabah under the guidance of the Student Life team as part of the Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP).

Through the BEST (Be English Speaker Today) programme, the volunteers conducted interactive English lessons at rural schools, using games, storytelling, and simple conversations to help students build confidence in speaking English. Over six days, the team reached more than 200 students across seven schools.

Beyond the classrooms, the experience challenged volunteers to adapt to unfamiliar environments, work closely as a team, and support one another through long days and limited resources. These moments helped shape their resilience, empathy, and leadership skills.

OCIP Sabah showed that learning does not only happen in classrooms. Through service, students discovered how much they could grow when they stepped beyond borders.

Balik Kampung

Balik Kampung

Balik Kampung

Balik Kampung, organised by iCare Subcommittee Group Stellarnauts, was a kampung-themed engagement programme held at Geylang East Home for the Aged (GEHA). The event brought together 27 elderly residents19 volunteers, and 4 planning committee members for an afternoon centred on nostalgia, connection, and community.

Inspired by the warmth of kampung life, the programme aimed to spark joy and meaningful interaction through thoughtfully curated activities. The session opened with Speed Chit Chat, an icebreaker that encouraged conversations and laughter between the elderly and volunteers. This was followed by Kampung Memory Lane, where participants engaged enthusiastically with nostalgic choices related to food, music, and traditional games, supported by visual cues to ensure inclusivity across language differences.

The creative activity Batik Blooms provided a quieter space for expression, with elderly participants painting batik designs while sharing stories of their past. Volunteers offered guidance and companionship, creating moments of patience, care, and connection. Some participants chose to keep their artwork as a memento, while others gifted theirs to volunteers as keepsakes.

The programme concluded with Box of Nostalgia, a kampung-inspired game accompanied by familiar music. The activity encouraged reflection and storytelling through questions, guessing games, and traditional play, fostering smiles, laughter, and emotional connection among participants.

Despite language and physical challenges, the strong teamwork between volunteers and organisers ensured a warm and engaging experience. Balik Kampung successfully revived fond memories of kampung life while creating new moments of joy and connection, reinforcing the importance of community, empathy, and shared experiences.

SLAAN 2025: Celebrating Student Excellence and Leadership

SLAAN 2025: Celebrating Student Excellence and Leadership

SLAAN 2025: Celebrating Student Excellence and Leadership

On 9 July 2025, the SIM Student Development team proudly hosted the annual Student Leaders’ Awards & Appreciation Night (SLAAN) at the SIM Multi-Purpose Hall — an evening dedicated to celebrating their remarkable contributions to student life.

This year’s SLAAN recognised students who have gone above and beyond in leading clubs, mentoring peers, volunteering, and building a vibrant and inclusive campus community. Whether through event planning or peer support, their efforts have left a lasting impact on campus life.

✨ The Performance ✨

The celebration was elevated by performances from Esprimere Band, who performed “The Climb” and “Come Inside of My Heart,” and the SIM Guitar and Strings Ensemble, who presented “Beauty and the Beast” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”

Both groups captivated the audience with their heartfelt renditions.

✨ The Awards ✨

The evening was graced by Mr David Chua, Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Council (NYC), who delivered an inspiring keynote on the power of youth leadership.

🎓 Awards Presented at SLAAN 2025:

  • 🏅 Impetus Award

  • 🌟 Impact Award

  • 🤝 Peer Mentoring Award

  • 📝 Certificate of Appreciation

  • 🏆 Excellence Award

  • ✨ Helm Award
  • 🎉 Outstanding Event Award

These awards celebrate excellence across leadership, initiative, mentorship, and service — and reflect the heart, energy, and dedication our students bring to the SIM community.

My biggest takeaway is to accept that you might not know all the answers. Your members may come to you for guidance and you are expected to be a rock. This can distort you to thinking that you are always right and only your way works.

Do not let that perception creep in, always be humble and open to new opinions and experiences.

Jees Adams, President of RMITSC

Being in SIMAA helped me to hone my interpersonal skills by giving me the chance to be a part of a team and learn how to communicate effectively……I started to learn how to create teams and how to manage them so that we work as one functioning body to execute our goals.

Trevor Tan, President of Accounting Association

🌟 Congratulations to all awardees!
🌟

Your passion, resilience, and commitment continue to uplift and inspire those around you. As SIM continues to empower future-ready leaders, may your stories of service and leadership spark even more students to step forward and make a difference.

The annual Student Involvement Drive (SID) 2025 returned across two sessions, from 4 to 5 August and 27 to 28 August, transforming the Student Hub (Blk B, Level 1) into a buzzing space of discovery and connection. From sports and fitness to arts & culture, and special interest groups, students explored the many ways they could get involved and find their place in campus life.

Across the four days, students stopped by booths to chat with club members, catch live performances, and take part in fun, interactive activities. Dance and music showcases brought energy to the space, while casual conversations sparked new interests and connections, reflecting the diversity and creativity of SIM’s student community.

More than just a recruitment drive, SID 2025 was a celebration of student life, passion, and belonging. Enjoy the photo carousel below, capturing highlights from all four days and the moments that brought the student community together.
