Student Learning Centre’s Academic Writing workshop series aims to equip our students with the necessary skills to excel in their respective programme’s needs such as assignment, report, essay and exam writing. Each workshop aims at different aspects of writing.

Academic Writing (I) – Essentials of Academic Writing

Learning Outcomes:

Learn to distinguish between common genres of academic writing, namely, reports, essays, and literature reviews. Understand the requirements of assignments and be familiar with academic conventions such as plagiarism and referencing.

Academic Writing (II) – Structuring & Writing Essays

Learning Outcomes:

Learn about the structure of an essay. Be able to write and revise or edit paragraphs. Understand how to summarize, paraphrase, and synthesize materials for your course assignments.

Academic Writing (III) – Developing and Supporting An Argument

Learning Outcomes:

Learn to include research information to strengthen your argument, and provide a focused and critical response to your assignments.

  1. Include information from your research in your assignments
  2. Choose between different techniques to include this information
  3. Differentiate your own “voice” from that of your sources
  4. Avoid unintentional plagiarism

Academic Writing (V) – Citation & Referencing (APA / Harvard)

Learning Outcomes:

APA Style : Establishing Credibility
Learn the basics of APA format, both in-text references and reference page, and be able to use APA citation style confidently to cite references in your paper.

Harvard Style : Establishing Credibility
Learn the basics of Harvard referencing format, both in-text references and reference page, and be able to use Harvard referencing style confidently to cite references in your paper.
