Jumping into DIPIN! – September 2023 Diploma Orientation

First impressions are important, especially so for any new students joining our institution! Finding friends and navigating a new campus can be pretty daunting as well, so SDEV has put their best foot forward in the organization of the very recent Diploma Orientation programme (or  DIPIN for short). DIPIN is an orientation programme organised by SDEV to make sure that incoming batches of diploma students have the time and space to form connections with their potential classmates as well as orient themselves to SIM, its facilities and their various programmes set up to support these students’ educational journey.

For this month’s DIPIN, we had a total of (insert amount) students attending. Our participants came from a variety of countries and programmes, leading to a fairly diverse collection of colourful personalities! SDEV didn’t do this alone, however, as we were supported by a team of student volunteers who helped provide our participants with a warm welcome. A fair number of our volunteers were leaders that came from international student clubs such as the SIM Chinese National Network and MY-SIM, making sure that their fellow international students ease into this new foreign environment as comfortably as they can!

The programme ran in 2 shifts with a morning session and an afternoon session for 2 batches of students. The morning session started fairly early, and it showed with our participants walking in still rubbing the dust out of their eyes. Nonetheless, the energy ramped up as our staff and volunteers started the event off with a few icebreakers. After the participants got to know each other, they were toured through SIM to they knew where to find academic support for whatever needs they may have. Our student volunteers proved diligent and sociable as participants got to be more familiar with their campus.

It wasn’t all fun and games, however. We did our due diligence in providing educational talks that introduced new students to vital information such as tips on managing academic stress and communication theories that will help them navigate school life. We even had police offers provide a very informational presentation on common scams and how the participants can avoid and deal with them.

All in all, the programme was a roaring success with our participants heading home with attractive prizes & giveaways, a greater familiarity with their new school, and new friends to embark on their new educational journey!

World University Games 2023 – Congratulating our Students Representatives!

The World University Games, also known as the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event specifically organized for university athletes from around the world. The primary objective of this event is to promote a platform for student athletes to showcase their athletic talents while fostering friendship, understanding and cooperation among young people from diverse backgrounds.

Held every two years, this year’s Universiade took place in Chengdu, China from 28 July to 8 August. During the event, university athletes compete in various sports disciplines including archery, gymnastics, shooting, rowing, wushu and many others.

Representing SIM were 19 student athletes from different sports such as Swimming, Water Polo, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, alongside 2 Student Development staff. Each of these teams found themselves stationed at distinct venues across Chengdu, where they engaged in competitions and training regimens.

One of our standout student athletes, Chan Zi Yi, a member of the Swimming team, praised Chengdu’s hosting of the games. The organization, including food, accommodations, and transportation was top-notch. From the moment they set foot in Chengdu, the volunteers treated them like VIPs, ensuring they felt right at home. The athlete’s village, affectionately known as Chengdu University, was well-equipped, and buggies made it easy to get around.

As a self-proclaimed food enthusiast, diverse cuisines that were a highlight for Zi Yi, with the sesame tangyuan etching themselves into her memory. Chengdu didn’t merely offer a feast for the taste buds; it also laid out an array of engaging cultural activities during free time.

For Zi Yi, this Universiade proved to be one of the most memorable she had ever experienced. The camaraderie within her team and the dedicated efforts of her team managers, Henry and Clement left an indelible mark. She passionately advocates that the World University Games should be on the radar of every university student athlete, given the eye-opening experiences it offers.

In the realm of achievements, Zi Yi’s prowess shone through as she earned a place in the finals for the Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team, securing a commendable 7th place overall.

In closing, the Universiade in Chengdu was not just an event; it was an unforgettable journey of athleticism, camaraderie, cultural exchange, and personal growth, leaving a profound impact on all those fortunate enough to participate.

Looking back on Student Involvement Drive 2023!

Once again, the Student Involvement Drive is back with a bang! On the 4th and 5th of July, we were back at The Atrium, showcasing clubs from Arts & Culture, International Students, Special Interests, Sports, and Student Councils. The successful stint saw 65 SIM clubs and councils and 600 student signups.

Students dove into conversations with our passionate student leaders who spilled the beans about their clubs. Meanwhile, the magic was relived through performances by our talented student clubs: SIM Aikido, SIM Dance Art, SIM Dance Sport, SIM DreamWerkz, SIM Esprimere Singing Club, SIM Guitar Club, SIM Muay Thai, SIM Salsa En Soul, SIM Silat, SIM String Ensemble, SIM Indonesian Community, SIM Taekwondo, and SIM Tamil Youth Society.

And who could forget the chance to score cool prizes and snag freebies? There were churros, nachos and iced popsicles up for grabs! Also, the lucky draw gave away attractive prizes such as Sony Headphones and earbuds, Muji gift card, Golden Village premium vouchers and more!

EQUIP Camp 2023

On 15 July 2023, a contingent of our student leaders gathered together seeking to develop their leadership skills and obtain valuable knowledge – and SDEV’s EQUIP Camp was the perfect opportunity for that! For the uninitiated, EQUIP is an annual camp run by SIM’s very own Student Development department to provide student leaders the opportunity to hone their leadership and management skills. Typically conducted off campus, Student Development’s staff conceptualise and conduct a mix of hands on and theory-rich activities to fill out the camp’s schedule. This provides more than just rote learning of various leadership and communication styles: it provides opportunities to put these theories into practice.

This year, EQUIP started on campus in the MPH with icebreakers and team-building activities to set the tone for the camp. Participants got to introduce themselves and get familiar with each other through physically and mentally stimulating group activities. We also had a light introduction to a few communication theories; providing our participants with some food for thought before they rested for the night. The next day started early as the students got up early to board the bus to the Tanjong Puteri Gold Resort in Johor Bahru, Malaysia where the rest of the camp would be conducted. This year’s venue was chosen so we would have plenty of space and a variety of locations for us to do plenty of different and challenging activities to keep everyone engaged as well as stellar villas for them to retire to after a long day.
Our first day in Tanjong Puteri saw our students start on building team rapport with an inter-villa competition to get the blood pumping and limbs moving after spending the morning in their buses. The competition was then followed by a lecture and discussion to stretch their mental muscles and prepare them for the final activity for the day: The Night Walk. It was a mix of a test of courage and a time to reflect as students moved off into the dark in pairs.
The second day was a fair bit more action packed. While the student leaders were introduced to more systems thinking theories, communication strategies and dynamics and more nuanced approaches to leadership, these lessons were further cemented as the students were challenged by an Amazing Race. Students were sent all over the resort to attempt various challenges that tested their physical coordination, endurance, and most of all their mental acquity.
On the third and final day in the resort, our student leaders were given the final challenge to bash together makeshift rafts meant to traverse the length of a swimming pool. Unfortunately, the staff and students were stymied by the lightning alert that left us all beached with some very studiously made rafts.
To round out the day, we organised a campfire night and challenged the students’ teams to put together a skit and a pitch presentation to advertise a product; specifically a toothpick for sharks. On top of giving our leaders a chance to manage themselves and their teams to take on the challenge, we also got to see everyone show off their creative skills and humour, testing another skill a leader often needs; charisma.
All in all, EQUIP was an action-packed experience. Beyond the skills and knowledge, networking and building bonds between clubs through our student leaders and club advisors is important to fostering SIM’s student life culture.
