Walk the sky at student leadership camp

WHEN YOU are selected to be a student leader at SIM, you will have the chance to take part in many activities from rowing dragon boats to walking the sky. You develop skills in leadership and teamwork during these events.

Laura Thiri Shwe says she was terrified of swinging ropes and falling from heights but she overcame her fears to walk suspended between sky and earth. It gave her a sense of freedom when she did it.

Edmund Ho Hao Yang from Malaysia rowed his first dragon boat under a burning sun. He rowed and rowed until his muscles couldn’t tahan (endure) any longer when he was hit with the life-changing revelation that “if you wanna go fast, go alone, but if you wanna go far, go as a team”. (As we know, a dragon boat doesn’t go fast or far if there’s only one paddler.)

WHENEVER you watch a dragon boat race, it is most likely that the team going up to receive the prizes is from SIM.

For instance, in 2015, the SIM Dragons swept both the women’s and men’s Prime Minister’s Trophy, making it their fourth victory since 2010.

Recruiting students for CCA clubs

Student club leaders and members were out in full force to win other students to their particular sport or activity at the mid-year membership recruitment.

At SIM, there are more than 70 clubs and interest groups for every artistic, sport and intellectual pursuit, whether it be dancing, debating or dragon-boating.

The different CCA activities and events are all conceived, organised and managed by the students themselves.

Understanding what drives the Singapore economy

Understanding what drives the Singapore economy

WHAT BETTER way to understand how Singapore’s economy ticks than to hear from the country’s Chief Economist himself.

So, last year at the SIM student-organised Economics Summit, none other than Mr Edward Robinson, Assistant Managing Director (Economic Policy) and Chief Economist of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), spoke on Singapore’s monetary policy and explained how MAS manages the dollar’s exchange rate.

At the summit, a broad range of issues were also brought up by other leading economists:

Dr Joseph Djiwandono, professor at Nanyang Technological University, gave an insight into Indonesia’s economic outlook and its competitiveness within ASEAN. As the former Governor of Bank Indonesia and Indonesia’s State Minister of Trade, he shared with students his perspectives on areas which Indonesia needs to improve and the nation’s current standing among other countries.

Dr Prakash Kannan, Head of Economics from GIC gave an informative session on how GIC manages Singapore’s reserves and the impact of reserves on Singapore.

Dr Walter Theseira, senior lecturer at UniSIM, spoke on Singapore’s social and welfare policies.

Tea with Alice and her Wonderland characters

READERS of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland have long been mystified by the fact that when the Cheshire Cat disappears, its smile is still seen. “This is no mystery, really,” says the Cat herself. “It means you remember the smile even when the person is no longer in your presence.”

You can spot these strange Anime characters like the Cheshire Cat (Rebecca Lo) when you wander around the SIM campus. The Cat can be seen with Mad Hatter (Chee Kar Leong), the Red Queen (Catherine Woo Kai Ting), White Rabbit Ryan (Avery Tan), Alice herself (Nang Moung Phoung) and other members of the SIM Anime & Gaming Club.

During that event in October 2015, Alice and her friends served tea, snacks and cakes to raise money for the Red Cross.
